Raised in Port Huron. . . Returned to Port Huron
My first memories of Port Huron include visits to the St. Clair County Main Library, movies and concerts at McMorran Auditorium, and trips down the Black and St. Clair Rivers in our family boat. You see, I was raised in the Blue Water Area. I attended Fort Gratiot Middle School and graduated from Port Huron Northern in 1999. You may have known me then by my maiden name, Rachel Hasper.
After high school, I attended college at Michigan State University where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Mathematics. After completing my degree, I chose to move back to Port Huron. I got married in the summer of 2004, and in the fall began my career at Landmark Academy teaching Middle School Mathematics.
In 2006, my husband and I purchased a home in the downtown Port Huron area. We enjoy living within walking distance of the downtown businesses and restaurants. We have joined with other residents on our block to begin a Neighborhood Watch group which has helped us get to know each other and improve safety on our streets. It has been exciting to see the changes on our block and on the blocks around us as neighbors come together for the good of our community.
I continued my education at Marygrove College, earning a Master's Degree in the Art of Teaching with a focus on Curriculum and Assessment in 2009. Now, after seven years of teaching at Landmark Academy, I have a new role as the Academic Quality Coach (Curriculum and Assessment Director) for the Middle and High Schools. I consider it an honor to team with the teaching and leadership staff in order to provide excellence in education for our students.
When I'm not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family and taking advantage of all Port Huron has to offer. Maybe you have seen me around town, shopping at the Vantage Point Farmer's Market or working at the Park Place Landscaping booth during the spring Flower Market. I take pleasure in attending the Rockin' the Rivers concerts and Boat Week festivities. On the weekends, you can probably find me riding my bike around the neighborhood, checking out the shops downtown, or heading out to dinner with my husband.
I am a lifelong resident of the Blue Water Area and have a special place in my heart for Port Huron. I was raised here and I chose to stay here. I desire the best for our city, and look forward to the opportunity to represent Port Huron residents as a member of the Port Huron City Council.
